South Creek to Second Pond

A classic paddle that starts in South Creek, traverses Middle Saranac Lake, and leads to Lower Saranac Lake through the Saranac River. The trip ends between First and Second Pond, and is a mix of incredible scenic lake paddling with mountain views, and peaceful river floating through marshes. This stretch is part of the Saranac Lake Paddling Challenge.
How to get there
The trip starts at the South Creek access site (Middle Saranac Lake boat launch), on the south side of State Route 3, about 10 miles west of Saranac Lake. There's room for 20 cars to park.
By the numbers
- 7 miles of flatwater
- Mix of narrow river and wide open lake paddling
Paddling
Beginning at the South Creek boat launch, you'll follow the creek into Middle Saranac Lake and past its beautiful sandy beaches. You will then enter a section of the Saranac River that passes through quiet marshlands, and then on to the Upper Locks. The locks are manually operated, which adds to the uniqueness of the trip. If you’re traveling solo, or want to avoid going through the locks, it’s an easy carry around them. From there you continue to wind your way down the river until eventually paddling onto Lower Saranac Lake. As you reach the picturesque islands, you’ll see Bluff Island with its imposing 60ft cliff. A good place to take a break and go on a short hike to the top for the amazing view of the lake and surrounding mountains. From there you will make your way into the Saranac River once again and paddle on to your destination at the Second Pond boat launch.
